Working as an ITU Nurse
ITU Nurses play a vital role caring for patients who have serious illnesses and injuries. You’ll be working in an intensive care unit, where you’ll be treating patients with serious ailments, so you’ll need to be comfortable working at pace, whilst still providing sensitive and empathetic care. What does an ITU Nurse do?
Patients with serious injuries and rapidly onsetting illnesses need immediate care. And, as an ITU Nurse, you’ll be responsible for making sure these patients get the urgent and vital care they need.
Although some ITU Nurses work in private hospitals and health boards, the majority of urgent care units are in busy hospitals. From one day to the next, you’ll be working with patients who have suffered from stroke or organ failure, or have sustained serious physical injuries and traumas. You’ll also be giving important care to patients recovering from operations, as well as those with complex needs, so you’ll need to quickly adapt to the changing needs of many different patients.
As an ITU Nurse, some of your key responsibilities will include:
- assessing patient vital signs
- formulating care plans with other colleagues
- ensuring all medical equipment is working properly, including ventilators, drains and catheters
- communicating and working closely with colleagues
- maintaining patient records
- acting as a source of support and development for your other colleagues
As you’ll be providing urgent care, you’ll need to work closely with a range of colleagues to ensure you’re providing the right care, including:
- critical care doctors and nurses
- general medical and surgical nurses
- consultants
- junior doctors and nurses
What qualifications and experience do you need for an ITU Nurse job with Medacs?

- being a registered nurse
- having at least six months’ relevant NHS experience within the last three years
- passing an enhanced background check
